Finales

So, I finished Breaking Dawn this weekend, as I'm sure many of you did. There's a review and discussion on my blog, as I'm sure there are many other blogs, but that's not what I want to talk about today. Reading Breaking Dawn drudged up a lot of feelings and memories of reading the final Harry Potter book around this time last year. It got me thinking about a lot of other final books in popular series. I always go into them excited and pumped up, caught up in the story, but find myself a little sad that everything is changing. But that feeling is sort of lost as I get caught up in the suspense and climax....only to return again as the ending unfolds.

Reliving these experiences with Breaking Dawn has inspired me to finish The Sweet Far Thing. I know, you must be thinking, "Are you a newcomer to the series?" No, I am not. I pre-ordered my first edition copy of A Great and Terrible Beauty back in 2003-ish, and have been an avid reader all along. But when December rolled around last year, and The Sweet Far Thing was released, I bought it, read the first chapter....and then life got in the way. I did my major research project, reviewed some other books, had my wisdom teeth pulled, put TSFT on my shelf and completely forgot! But now I really would like to finish it. If I can only find the time...

What are some of your favorite series enders?

Deathly Hallows no doubt, That was the perfect finale, it tied everything together.

I understand exactly how you feel. That's exactly what happened to me when I read Breaking Dawn.

As far as The Sweet Far Thing, I absolutely adored that book. It was an amazing series finale.

And... that is an extremely hard question to answer. Of course Harry Potter had a great finale, because it was a great series.

I really can't think of any others. Whether it's because I've got my thoughts filled with the ones you've mentioned, or because none of them really ended fantastically, I'm not sure.

Now that you come to ask about it... I don't think I've ever read a lot of series. I don't think The Boyfriend List-The Boy Book count as a series, and the Heather Wells Mysteries aren't done... I never finished the Georgia Nicolson series... wow what is wrong with me? :'(

So many books, so little time.

Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters series made me knda sad though, because everything changed at the end. It just couldn't stand up to the first one, which I thought was amazing. So now when I read Wildwood Dancing, and it had a similar ending to Daught of the Forest, I got this illogical feeling that the sequels would let me down. Hopefully not.

And now I've realized that the Sevenwaters Trilogy is a poor analogy, cause there's a 4th book coming out!!
